She was selected by the board “in recognition of a revolutionary creative production that has marked the history of fashion design over the last fifty years, changing and expanding the concept of femininity, and for having conceived and promoted innovative campaigns with the aim of protecting life on our Mother Earth”.

Previous winners include the likes of Marina Abramović, Christo and Jean -Claude, Franco Zeffirelli, Anish Kapoor, and David Hockney.

In addition to the award, Vivienne also took part in a conversation panel on the 27th of October with photographer Oliviero Toscani and painter Michelangelo Pistoletto, who won the “Lorenzo il Magnifico” Lifetime Achievement Award for Art.

As a part of the Biennale, the house will be hosting an exhibition in the pavilion. Co-curated by designer Alex Krenn, the multi-disciplinary retrospective will showcase words, videos, photographs, and key looks on mannequins that retrace Vivienne and Andreas’ steps as revolutionary fashion designers, human rights supporters, and climate change activists.

Visitors can explore the exhibition space from the 23rd until the 31st of November 2021 at Fortezza da Basso, Padiglione Spaldolini. Please note that there will also be the opportunity to pick up a copy of the Thames and Hudson Catwalk book in the shop at the end.
